13th August 2022, Start 11:00AM, 31KM, 2,200M V+ SIERRE, SWITZERLAND Esther Chesang took victory at the 4th stage of the GTWS. To finance her trip she sold solidarity bracelets to raise a total of 1,400 euros.
There are certain stories that touch your heart. Esther Chesang (Team Sky Runners, Kenya) just won the legendarySierre-Zinal, 4th stage of the Golden Trail World Series; in front of the best European runners including the impressive Maude Mathys (Team Salomon, Switzerland). An exploit that almost didn’t happen because the Kenyan didn’t have the funds to finance her trip before she came up with this original idea.
Bracelets for Victory
To reach Switzerland, Esther Chesang had the idea to sell bracelets in Europe. "The cost of the trip to come to Switzerland cost 1,800 euros, and I bought bracelets from a friend from home for three euros a piece, she explains. I sent them to my coach who sold them in Europe. Thanks to this we were able to raise 1,400 euros. I call them solidarity bracelets." So, it’s no surprise that this year’s Sierre-Zinal winner crossed the line with immediate thoughts to all those who had helped her. "To all those who bought my bracelets I say "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!". Without them none of this would’ve been possible." Another twist to the story is that her husband Matthew Kiptanui, who finished 9th at Zegama this year, was meant to run this race also with high hopes, "unfortunately there was a problem with his visa, she explains, and he couldn’t leave Kenya. It’s such a shame because we were both supposed to run the race and it would’ve been brilliant. I can’t wait to join him and celebrate this victory, but I hope we can come back to Europe very soon for other races because I loved the atmosphere here!"
